I am Mutant Strong

My name if Irina Brooke, I am a BRCA2 mutant, I am Mutant Strong! I am a mother, wife, and advocate. A fierce advocate for my community. I love animals. I have a crazy sense of humor and I am bold.

Diagnosis...

I first had an initial lumpectomy before my BRCA diagnosis. It followed up by chemo, a bilateral mastectomy and a bso.  I learned my diagnosis from the radiologist.  I kept on calling him because my breast surgeon at the time was on vacation.  I didn't want to wait till he got back from vacation.

After numerous doctor's appointments I was advised to have chemo, a bilateral mastectomy and 5 years worth of AI's.  I also had a BSO (bilateral salpingo oopherectomy) because I am BRCA2 positive.

Life after breast cancer...

Life after breast cancer has it's ups and downs.  I have my good day's and bad day's.

Life after diagnosis is never the same.  I think you learn a different kind of appreciation for life.

Message to those affected by breast cancer...

What I would like to share with the breast cancer community is, we are our own best advocates.  Don't be afraid to ask questions. As many as possible.  Always go with you gut and  be kind to yourself.

As a breast cancer survivor, who/what has been the biggest inspiration during your journey?

I have had strong women who are mutants helping me along my journey. I’ve also looked up to the previvors who are so incredibly strong and brave. They have taken their life back and paved their own way for the future.  My advice to those on the community is, don’t go to one Dr. go see several doctors and different hospital. Choose your team carefully and remember, you are your own best advocate.
